The Lagos State Sports Commission has entered into a strategic partnership with Abbey Rangers Football Club, a community-based club in the United Kingdom, to strengthen grassroots football development across Lagos State.
The collaboration aims to build a structured development framework anchored on seven key pillars — talent discovery, coaching capacity enhancement, sports science integration, community engagement, policy advisory support, resource mobilisation, and infrastructure improvement.
As part of the initiative, a state-wide scouting programme will be launched across schools and communities to identify and nurture young talent. The programme will also provide technical training, scholarships, and holistic athlete support to ensure long-term player development.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the partnership as a major milestone in Lagos’ mission to create a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem.
> “This partnership is a deliberate step toward aligning Lagos with global best practices in grassroots football. Abbey Rangers brings valuable expertise, professional networks, and a community-driven approach that perfectly matches our vision. Together, we’ll open doors for young athletes, build coaching knowledge, and enhance sports management capacity,” Fatodu stated.
He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support for sports as a tool for youth empowerment and economic growth, noting that his administration’s commitment and investment in sports infrastructure made the partnership possible.
Chairman of Abbey Rangers Football Club, Mr. Nick Riley, also hailed the collaboration as a meaningful step toward bridging cultures and expanding grassroots football’s global reach.
> “We’re proud to partner with Lagos State on this visionary initiative. Community football has always been a powerful platform for inclusion and opportunity. Through this partnership, we’ll empower young players, improve coaching standards, and help shape the next generation of football talent,” Riley said.
The partnership marks a new chapter in Lagos’ efforts to position itself as a leading hub for sports talent and development in Africa.
