97 Senators Endorse Anioma State as Creation Efforts Reach Advanced Stage – Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko has announced that the long-standing campaign for the creation of Anioma State has reached an advanced stage, supported by overwhelming legislative backing and growing regional consensus.

Speaking at the unveiling of the maiden Anioma Cultural Festival (Anioma Day) in Abuja, Nwoko revealed that 97 senators have endorsed the proposed state, describing it as an unprecedented milestone in Nigeria’s state-creation history.

As Patron of the Izu Anioma Towns Union, Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the Senate, was among the distinguished indigenes honoured at the event held at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki.

He explained that his bill, introduced two years ago, seeks to carve Anioma State from nine local government areas of Delta North: four in Aniocha, two in Ika, three in Ndokwa, with interest from neighbouring communities like Igbanke to join the new state.

“Only one state will be created in Nigeria, and that one state will be Anioma,” Nwoko emphasized, noting that the initiative is supported by Senate and House Committees on Constitutional Amendment, which aim to bring the South-East to parity with other geopolitical zones by adding a sixth state.

The senator confirmed that the effort has backing from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Bola Tinubu, who has pledged support once all constitutional requirements are met.

Nwoko outlined the next steps, including documentation to the Presidency, concurrence by state assemblies and governors, and a national referendum. Upon approval, Anioma State will have Asaba as its capital and become one of two states in the new Delta region.

He urged Anioma people to remain united and focused. “I did not start this struggle, but I will finish it. Anioma State will mark the beginning of a new era,” he said.

Chief Barr Luke Enelichi, President of Izu Anioma Towns Union, described the demand for Anioma as a quest for justice, recognition, and equitable development. He called on all stakeholders to support the creation of the state, stressing the need for unity across Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika, and Oshimili.

“Despite our contributions to Delta State and Nigeria, we still lack a state that reflects our identity. We are one Anioma,” he declared.
