Matthijs de Ligt rescued a point for Manchester United with a last-gasp header in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as both sides missed the chance to climb to second place in the Premier League.
United appeared set for victory until Spurs mounted a dramatic late comeback. Mathys Tel struck an equaliser with six minutes left before Richarlison’s 91st-minute header gave Tottenham the lead. But De Ligt’s powerful 96th-minute header from a Bruno Fernandes corner ensured United extended their unbeaten run to five matches.
“Luckily, we got a point. I think we deserved more with the way we played,” De Ligt told TNT Sports. “I’m proud of how the team fought back and earned a result at a difficult stadium.”
Both teams now sit on 18 points after 11 games, with goal difference placing Tottenham in third and United in seventh. The Red Devils have now gone eight games without a win against Spurs, including last season’s Europa League final defeat that denied them European qualification.
Despite that setback, manager Ruben Amorim appears to be finding rhythm in his second season at Old Trafford. New signing Bryan Mbeumo, who joined from Brentford for £65 million, has been particularly impressive. The Cameroonian, recently named Premier League Player of the Month for October, opened the scoring with a header from Amad Diallo’s cross in the 32nd minute.
Spurs Rally After Poor Start
Following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend, Spurs endured another lacklustre first half before improving after the break. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a string of fine saves to deny Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha, while Brennan Johnson had a goal ruled out for offside.
Manager Thomas Frank’s substitutions eventually turned the game around. Destiny Udogie set up substitute Mathys Tel, whose deflected strike levelled the score, before Wilson Odobert’s curling effort was flicked in by Richarlison to put Tottenham ahead.
“I take a lot of positives from this performance,” Frank said. “There’s something to build on, but we must keep improving.”
Richarlison’s emotional celebration showed Spurs’ relief, but their joy was short-lived as De Ligt rose unmarked at the back post to head in the equaliser past Guglielmo Vicario.
The result leaves Tottenham still searching for their first home league win since the opening weekend of the season.
