Nigerian-heritage heavyweight boxer Moses Itauma has been crowned Breakthrough Athlete of the Year at the 2025 British Sports Awards, capping off a phenomenal year that solidified his status as one of boxing’s most promising young stars.
The 20-year-old sensation, who holds an unblemished professional record of 13 wins with 11 knockouts, delivered his most impressive performance yet in August, when he sensationally stopped Dillian Whyte in the first round in Saudi Arabia. The emphatic victory elevated Itauma to serious contender status in the heavyweight division.
His promoter, Frank Warren, celebrated the achievement on Facebook, writing: “Congratulations to Moses Itauma on achieving the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award. SJA British Sports Awards 2025.”
Fighting under Queensberry Promotions, Itauma is now set to face American heavyweight Jermaine Franklin on January 24 at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena. Franklin, known for his durability, has previously gone the distance with both Anthony Joshua and Whyte and remains unbeaten by stoppage in 26 professional fights.
Earlier in October, Itauma visited Nigeria for the first time to mark the nation’s 65th Independence Day, making appearances at several events, including the “Chaos in the Ring” boxing showcase at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Other honourees at the British Sports Awards included Michelle Agyemang (19), who won Women’s Breakthrough Athlete of the Year after scoring just 41 seconds into her England debut and helping the Lionesses reach the Euro 2025 final.
Rory McIlroy was named Sportsman of the Year following a standout season capped by a Masters victory and Ryder Cup success, while Chloe Kelly took home Sportswoman of the Year for her key role in England’s successful Euro title defence.
The Lionesses also clinched Sports Team of the Year, and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton received the SJA President’s Award for her exceptional performances at both club and international levels.
Itauma’s latest honour marks another milestone in his meteoric rise and reinforces his reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in world boxing.
