The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has partnered with the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) to identify and nurture young swimming talents with the potential to become future national and international champions.

Dukwu Chamberlain, president of NAqF, confirmed the collaboration on Wednesday during the 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games in Jos, where swimming events were jointly organised by the Federation and NUGA.

Chamberlain highlighted that the partnership is already bearing fruit, with several emerging athletes delivering standout performances at the Games. He praised NUGA for its pivotal role in promoting university sports, describing the initiative as a strategic effort to boost swimming development nationwide.

“I want to first of all appreciate the president and leadership of NUGA for organising this 27th edition of the Nigerian University Games,” Chamberlain said. “The swimming events here are a collaborative effort between the Aquatics Federation and NUGA. The number of gold medals recorded so far shows there is a bright future for aquatic sports in Nigeria.”

The NAqF president also emphasized swimming as one of Nigeria’s most successful medal-winning sports, urging for increased investment in its development. “In the committee of sports, aquatic swimming has the highest number of gold medals,” he added. “Focusing on swimming development will ensure Nigeria continues to excel in continental and international competitions.”

Chamberlain explained that the partnership with NUGA is part of the Federation’s long-term strategy to strengthen grassroots participation and establish a sustainable pathway for young athletes to progress from university competitions to representing Nigeria on the global stage.
