Cristiano Ronaldo may miss at least the opening game of the 2026 World Cup after being sent off for violent conduct during Portugal’s 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.
According to ESPN, the Al Nassr forward initially received a yellow card in the 61st minute for elbowing Irish defender Dara O’Shea. However, after a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a red card. This marks Ronaldo’s first red card for Portugal in his 226th international appearance—a men’s football record—though he has been sent off 13 times at club level.
Under FIFA disciplinary rules, Ronaldo faces a mandatory one-match ban in competitive fixtures. Regulations state that violent conduct, including elbowing, could lead to a suspension of at least three matches or an appropriate period depending on the severity. The ban applies to competitive games only, not pre-tournament friendlies.
Portugal entered the match knowing a win would secure their 2026 World Cup spot in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but Troy Parrott’s two goals stunned the visitors. Despite the loss, Portugal still leads Group F, two points ahead of Hungary, meaning a win against Armenia on Sunday would guarantee Ronaldo a place at his sixth World Cup.
Ahead of the game, Ronaldo acknowledged the challenge of playing at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, anticipating boos from Irish fans. He said, “I really like the fans here. The support they give to the national team is lovely. For me, it’s a pleasure to come and play here again. Of course, it will be tough. I hope they don’t boo me too much tomorrow. I swear that I’m going to try to be a good boy.”
After his red card, Ronaldo reacted to the crowd’s jeers with a wry expression, clapping his hands and giving two thumbs up in a gesture seen as sarcastic. This incident follows previous controversies with Irish fans, including claims that he influenced a match official during Portugal’s last-minute win in the reverse fixture.
