Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, says Nigeria is fully motivated to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s decisive playoff final against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rabat, Morocco, the defender stressed that the team needs no extra motivation.

“The boys are happy to be here competing on Sunday. There’s no other motivation we need. We all want to go to the World Cup,” Troost-Ekong told NFF Media. “It’s going to be a difficult game. DR Congo did well to reach the final, and we are looking forward to it.”

CAF Clears Ndidi for Decisive Clash

In a boost for the team, CAF has cleared Wilfred Ndidi to play despite receiving a second yellow card during Thursday’s 4–1 win over Gabon in the semi-final.

There had been confusion over his eligibility, but the Super Eagles confirmed on Saturday that the midfielder is permitted to feature.

Troost-Ekong welcomed the ruling: “Everyone is happy Wilfred can play. There was clarification, so no surprises. We also now clearly understand the implications of yellow cards for the next game.”

Nigeria’s Road to the Final

The Super Eagles booked their place in the playoff final after a dramatic extra-time victory over Gabon.

Sevilla striker Akor Adams opened scoring in the 78th minute before Mario Lemina equalised late in regulation time. Victor Osimhen missed a golden chance in extra time but later redeemed himself with two goals to help Nigeria secure a 4–1 win. Chidera Ejuke also scored his first goal for the national team in the 97th minute.

Troost-Ekong praised the team’s response: “Gabon were dangerous on the counter, but the boys dealt with it well.”

Focus Shifts to DR Congo

The captain expects a tough contest against DR Congo.
“I know one or two of their players. They play good football. It’s a different challenge. African teams can’t be compared, so we must adapt,” he said.

He added that the team has been building a clear identity over recent matches:
“We’re not trying to prove anything to anyone, just to ourselves. We’re focused. Sunday will be a big challenge.”

Troost-Ekong also noted the team’s growth under sustained pressure.
“Playing 120 minutes and returning after three days isn’t easy, but our focus has always been on Sunday. The team has grown a lot this past month, and we’re ready for the high-pressure moment.”
