The Abia State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy has addressed recent social media criticisms and false claims surrounding the upcoming Abia Comedy Fest, set for December 12 at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.
The Ministry clarified that the event is a collaborative effort between the Abia State Government and the reputable private promoter, Enyioha Global Promotions. Its role is strictly supportive and supervisory, ensuring the festival aligns with government objectives to promote arts, culture, tourism, and the creative economy while highlighting the state’s artistic talent.
Contrary to rumors suggesting a lack of local representation, several Abia-born entertainers, including MC Organic, Asanwa Merit, Funny Urch, Don Wise, and P-Square (with Abia marital roots), are scheduled to perform. The organizers have intentionally maintained a balanced mix of local and prominent acts to celebrate homegrown talent.
The Ministry also emphasized that proper identification and registration with government-approved entertainment bodies is required for effective planning and industry growth. While some groups have not yet registered, associations such as the Actors Guild of Nigeria (Abia State Chapter), Hotel Owners Association, and other creative organizations have complied. The Ministry assured the public that Governor Alex Otti remains fully committed to supporting creative ventures that enhance tourism, expand the creative economy, and position Abia as a leading cultural hub.
