Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has extended an apology to Nigerians following the team’s narrow exit from the 2026 World Cup race. Speaking after the intense African playoff final against DR Congo, Nwabali emphasised that the squad “gave everything for the badge” in their pursuit of qualification.
Nigeria’s campaign ended in heartbreak after a 4–3 penalty shootout defeat, with the match having finished 1–1 after extra time. Despite Nwabali’s heroics, saving two penalties, the misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi ultimately cost the team their World Cup hopes.
DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, netted the decisive penalty, sending his side through to the intercontinental playoffs. The result brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s ambitions on the global stage, leaving fans and players alike disappointed.
In an Instagram post after the game, Nwabali reflected on the emotional weight of the loss, noting that he once supported the Super Eagles and understands the frustration of a disappointing night. He added that the team’s best efforts “weren’t enough” and that the players “take full responsibility” for the outcome.
