Team Nigeria Triumphs at 2025 WESPAC, Snatches Best Country Title from the USA

Team Nigeria emerged victorious at the 2025 WESPAC World Scrabble Championship in Accra, Ghana, claiming the coveted Best Country title and dethroning the United States.

From the first day to the final round, the 15-man Nigerian squad dominated the competition, turning the Ghanaian capital into a showcase of their skill and determination. Leading the charge were Captain Rex Ogbakpa, Oluwatimilehin Doko, Abdulmumin Jimoh, Tega Okiemute, and Godwin Victor, all of whom secured spots in the top 20 individually, while Canada’s Adam Logan took home the individual championship.

The team amassed an impressive 350 wins, a +8975 cumulative points spread, and a 54.7% winning ratio. Two years ago in Las Vegas, Nigeria had narrowly lost the Best Country title to the USA, making this victory a momentous comeback.

Host nation Ghana finished a strong second with 114 wins, ahead of Kenya, while other African nations—including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, and South Africa—also made the Top 10 in the Best Country standings. In the individual rankings, debutant Oluwatimilehin Doko delivered a historic performance for Africa, finishing fifth globally with 21 wins and +1395 points.

Canada’s Adam Logan defeated New Zealand’s Nigel Richards 4-2 in a thrilling best-of-seven final.

Newly elected Nigeria Scrabble Federation President Bright Idahosa praised the team’s unity, resilience, and championship spirit. “We are proud of your achievements,” he said. “Your unity and resilience carried the true Nigerian spirit despite all challenges.”
