Werder Bremen Push for Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest Prepare to Let Striker Leave in January

Werder Bremen have emerged as strong contenders for Taiwo Awoniyi’s signature as the German side intensifies efforts to land the Nigeria international in the January transfer window.

Awoniyi has struggled for game time at Nottingham Forest since returning from injury in October and has slipped down the attacking hierarchy under new manager Sean Dyche. The forward has made just four Premier League appearances this season, logging 133 minutes in total since his comeback against Chelsea — a situation that has sparked fresh doubts over his future at the City Ground.

Reports from England indicate that Forest had once considered offering Awoniyi a contract extension before his injury issues, but that plan has now been shelved due to his limited impact since returning. According to Africafoot, the striker is now leaning towards a potential move to Werder Bremen as he explores options that would guarantee regular playing time.

The outlet reports that Awoniyi “is getting closer to Werder Bremen,” adding that the Bundesliga club “wish to sign the Nigeria international very soon.” It further revealed that following a meeting between Forest and the player’s representatives this week, both sides agreed that the club would not block a January exit if a suitable offer arrives.

Africafoot also noted that Forest are already working behind the scenes to bring in a new forward this winter to support Igor Jesus, while Awoniyi himself is eager to “regain significant playing time at a new club.” Although he prefers to remain in the Premier League, no English club has shown concrete interest so far, leaving Bremen as his most realistic option for now.

Werder Bremen manager Horst Steffen is said to rate the striker highly, with reports suggesting he views the powerful Nigerian as a player capable of becoming a key figure in his attack if a deal is agreed.

Though Awoniyi has attracted attention from two Premier League clubs and several Championship teams, he is believed to favour staying in topflight football. He has built a stable family life in England, where his wife, children and extended family are comfortably settled. However, with no firm Premier League offer on the table yet, Bremen currently lead the race as the winter transfer window approaches.
