The Abia State Government has announced plans to honour the late Abia-born Olympic boxer, Bishop Obisie Nwankpa, by instituting a special medal in his name at the Abia State Secondary School Unity Games.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Mr Raymond Ukwa, made the disclosure on Friday at the Umuahia Township Stadium during the state burial ceremony held in honour of the legendary sportsman.
According to Mr Ukwa, the Obisie Nwankpa Medal will be awarded to outstanding boxing champions at the annual Unity Games as a lasting tribute to the late Olympian’s dedication and immense contributions to sports development. He noted that the initiative is aimed at preserving Nwankpa’s legacy while inspiring young Abians to pursue excellence in sports.
Bishop Obisie Nwankpa, who died at the age of 75, was one of Nigeria’s celebrated boxing legends and an Olympian. He was a native of Okpulukwu Umuosu, Nsulu, in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.
