The Abia State Government has commissioned and officially taken over the newly constructed Ndi Okereke Abam Primary Healthcare Centre, donated by philanthropist, Chief James Ume (Ikem Abam), for the benefit of Ndi Okereke Abam community in Arochukwu Local Government Area.

Also commissioned were 30 purpose-built housing units for the less privileged and a church hall for the people of Idima Abam, equally donated by Chief Ume.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, praised Chief Ume for his generosity, noting that the projects perfectly align with the state government’s vision of improving the living standards of citizens and strengthening public-private partnerships.

He urged the beneficiaries, especially those allocated the housing units, to take ownership of the facilities and maintain them properly.

> “This is the type of public-private partnership the government encourages, all geared towards building a better society.
The community, as the direct beneficiaries, must take responsibility for these facilities because they are their assets,” the Governor stated.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, commended the quality and standard of the healthcare centre. He revealed that the facility is equipped with three multi-parameter monitors, oxygen delivery systems, an ultramodern laboratory, auto-analysers, incubators, male and female wards, a family planning clinic, a well-equipped pharmacy, and other state-of-the-art medical equipment.

He appealed to well-meaning individuals to support grassroots healthcare by helping residents enroll in the informal sector of the state’s health insurance scheme, emphasizing that achieving universal health coverage requires collective effort.

Earlier, the donor, Chief James Ume, said the projects were his contribution to improving the wellbeing of his people and supporting the developmental strides of Governor Alex Otti. He commended the Governor for his ongoing infrastructural projects, including work on the Abam–Arochukwu road, and called on residents to continue supporting the administration.
