The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an official investigation into incidents that occurred after recent Africa Cup of Nations quarter‑final matches, focusing on the conduct of players, officials, and media personnel.
The disciplinary action follows Nigeria’s 2‑0 victory over Algeria in Marrakesh, where tensions erupted immediately after the final whistle. Some members of the Algerian team reportedly confronted match officials, with videos showing players pursuing the referee into a tunnel. Clashes between journalists, supporters, and security staff were also reported in the mixed zone and surrounding areas.
CAF is also reviewing incidents from another quarter‑final match between the host nation and Cameroon for possible breaches of competition rules.
All reports and video evidence have been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board, which will determine appropriate actions, including possible sanctions. The governing body emphasised its commitment to professional standards and respect for referees, officials, and tournament organization.
Algeria’s Football Federation has lodged a formal complaint with CAF over refereeing decisions during their loss, challenging several calls made in the match.
