Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the Gunners are exploring the transfer market after midfielder Mikel Merino suffered a serious foot injury. The setback comes just four months before the end of the season, with Arsenal still competing on multiple fronts.
Merino sustained the injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on 25 January. A club statement confirmed he will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to return to full training before the season concludes.
Arteta described the loss as “a big blow,” adding, “When you lose a key player like this with four months left and all competitions to play for, you need to see if there’s a player available to step in immediately. If not, we’ll manage with what we have.”
The injury has prompted speculation over a possible move for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, although sources say such a transfer is unlikely. Other options, including Ruben Neves and recalling Ethan Nwaneri from his loan at Marseille, appear off the table.
Arsenal also faced concerns over winger Bukayo Saka, who picked up a minor injury in the warm-up before the 4-0 victory over Leeds United. Arteta indicated the situation is not serious, and Saka could be available for upcoming matches. Noni Madueke filled in effectively for Saka at Elland Road, scoring a goal and providing an assist.
With the transfer window closing soon, Arteta and his team are under pressure to find solutions to maintain squad depth, especially in midfield. “At this level, a replacement has to adapt immediately and impact the team,” Arteta added.
The Gunners are now preparing for the final weeks of the season while juggling injury concerns and potential late-window moves.
