German‑born track star Jami Schlueter has raised the bar for Nigerian athletics by setting a new national indoor heptathlon record at the 2026 US Combined Events Championships in Indianapolis, scoring 5,871 points and climbing to second place on Africa’s all‑time list.
The 23‑year‑old, who switched allegiance from Great Britain to Nigeria in late 2025, surpassed his own recent record — first set earlier this month in Texas — by delivering strong performances across all seven events, including personal bests in long jump, hurdles and the 1,000 metres.
Although he finished fifth overall in the competition, his performance underscores a rapid rise since becoming eligible to represent Nigeria and highlights his versatility in sprints, jumps and throws.
Schlueter, a University of Washington graduate, now aims to build on this momentum as he continues challenging continental and national standards in combined events.
