Nigerian student‑athletes turned heads across the United States this weekend, combining for an impressive 32 podium finishes at various 2026 NCAA indoor conference championships — a performance many are calling one of the best in recent years.

The standout results came in multiple elite conference meets, including the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC, where Nigerians claimed titles and set personal, national and conference bests, demonstrating their growing influence in collegiate track and field.

At the SEC Championships, Samuel Ogazi from Alabama stunned the field in the men’s 400m, clocking 44.72 seconds to take gold and break the Nigerian and African indoor 400m record. Ella Onojuvwevwo of LSU also impressed by winning the women’s 400m in a personal best of 50.96 seconds, becoming one of the fastest indoor 400m runners in African history.

Sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi of Auburn claimed gold in the men’s 60m dash with a blistering 6.45‑second run, setting a new Nigerian indoor record and equalling one of the fastest times ever in NCAA history. His teammate Israel Okon backed him up with a bronze medal in the same event.

Elsewhere, Nigerian athletes found success across field events and middle‑distance races: from long jump and triple jump medals to podium finishes in 600m and 200m races — broadening the nation’s footprint across the collegiate indoor season.

With conference competition now wrapped up, attention turns to the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in March, where many of these medal‑winning Nigerians will compete for national titles and potentially etch their names into NCAA history.
