The ancient city of Ibadan is gearing up to host a major university sports festival as the University of Ibadan was selected to stage the 2026 Afro‑Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge from May 28 to June 1, 2026. The annual event, organised by the Federation of African University Sports (FASU), will bring together top university basketball teams from across Africa for a week of fast‑paced 3×3 competition.
More than just a regional tournament, this year’s event doubles as a qualifier for the FISU 3×3 World Cup, with the two leading men’s and women’s teams earning spots to compete internationally on behalf of the continent.
Only registered university students between 17 and 25 years old will be eligible to compete, and participating squads must have active profiles on the official 3×3 ranking platform to earn points and official standings.
The window to register opens on March 15, and institutions are expected to confirm their teams by May 15. This event not only boosts the city’s reputation as a hub for African university sport but also gives student‑athletes a major stage to showcase their skills and earn international opportunities.
