Nigeria Unveils 10‑Member Boxing Team for Glasgow Games

Nigeria has officially confirmed the boxers who will represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, following a competitive four‑day national trial at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex in Lagos.

The selection event featured 128 fighters — including 121 men and 27 women — competing across ten weight divisions. Only the winners in each category earned a spot on the final team heading to Scotland.

Notable among the qualifiers is UK‑based star Patricia Mbata, the 2023 African Games gold medallist, who secured first place in the women’s 70kg class. Her victory was widely celebrated, highlighting her status as one of Nigeria’s top female boxers.

The female members of the squad include Happiness Udoette (51kg), Kadijat Ajishola (57kg), Damilola Sodipe (65kg), and Celestine Edoka (+70kg). On the men’s side, Ogunremi Michael (55kg), Wahab Abdurrahman (65kg), Folly Hassan (70kg), Daniel Joshua (80kg), and Kenneth Anigbodo (90kg) earned their places.

Officials from the Nigeria Boxing Federation commended the high level of skill and determination shown during the trials. They also plan to invite additional fighters to join training camp as sparring partners to help the team prepare for the international stage.

Nigeria aims to improve on its performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the boxing squad returned with four medals. The Glasgow Games are scheduled from July 24 to August 1, 2026, with boxing among the featured sports.
