World football governing body, FIFA, has imposed disciplinary penalties on the football authorities of Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo following incidents that occurred during their heated playoff match in the race for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The sanctions followed a review of the tense encounter played in November 2025, where DR Congo defeated Nigeria through a penalty shootout to progress in the qualification series. FIFA’s disciplinary committee found that both sides violated match regulations relating to security and fan conduct.
Nigeria’s football federation was penalised after fans reportedly threw objects onto the pitch during the game, an act considered a breach of stadium safety and crowd control rules. As a result, the Nigerian authorities were fined by the global football body.
Meanwhile, DR Congo’s football federation received a stricter sanction after some supporters were accused of shining laser lights during the match, an action prohibited in international football because it can distract players and officials.
The ruling came months after the dramatic contest that ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup while allowing DR Congo to move forward in the qualification race. The decision also followed earlier complaints raised by Nigerian officials concerning issues surrounding the match.
