The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the killing of residents in Angwan Rukuba, Gari Ya Waye area of Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, following an attack by armed men on Palm Sunday.

In a statement issued in Abuja, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, decried the incident, describing it as a tragic assault on innocent civilians. He said the attackers, reportedly dressed in security uniforms, stormed the community and opened fire on defenceless residents.

Okoh lamented that a day meant for peace, hope, and reflection turned into one of violence, noting that men, women, and children were killed without provocation.

“This is not just tragic; it is unacceptable,” he said. “We mourn the victims, but we must also ask hard questions. How have we reached a point where people no longer feel safe in their homes, even on a sacred day?”

He stressed that the continued wave of violence threatens the nation’s progress, insisting that justice must be served and citizens adequately protected.

“We owe the dead justice, the living protection, and the future a country where no community wakes up to violence,” Okoh added, urging authorities to move beyond statements and take decisive action against those responsible.

CAN also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, while reports indicate that as many as 24 people may have been killed in the attack, the Plateau State Police Command confirmed 14 deaths.

Police spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, said the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, visited the scene and sympathised with affected residents.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang also toured the area, urging calm among residents and assuring that efforts are underway to apprehend those behind the attack.
