A Ghanaian Premier League footballer has lost his life after a violent armed robbery attack targeted his club’s team bus while returning from a league match.
The incident happened on Sunday evening when armed men reportedly ambushed the bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea after their away fixture against FC Samartex.
According to reports from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the attackers opened fire on the moving vehicle, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes in a bid to escape.
During the chaos, one of the players, identified as a young winger for the club, was struck by gunfire. He was later rushed to a hospital but was confirmed dead, making him the only fatality in the incident.
The GFA has described the attack as a devastating loss to Ghanaian football, noting that the player was seen as a rising talent with a promising future in the league.
Security agencies have since launched investigations into the incident, while football authorities say they are working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen safety measures for team travel across the country.
