Cricket Federation Plans New Elite League to Raise Competitive Standards

The Nigeria Cricket Federation has unveiled plans to introduce a top-tier cricket competition aimed at strengthening the structure of the sport across the country.

The proposed elite league is expected to bring together the best teams from existing domestic competitions, creating a more competitive environment and helping to streamline the growing number of tournaments. The federation’s leadership made this known during the closing ceremony of a major club cricket season.

The announcement follows a successful run of the Club Cricket Committee League, which featured multiple divisions and formats over several months. Strong performances recorded during the season have encouraged the push for a higher-level competition.

Officials say the new league could begin as early as May, depending on favourable conditions, and is expected to further develop local talent while giving national team selectors a broader pool of players to assess.

Beyond this initiative, the federation continues to support cricket development programmes nationwide as part of its long-term plan to grow the sport and boost Nigeria’s presence on the global stage.
