As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, has called on political leaders across the country to recommit themselves to the ideals of patriotism, public service, and national development.
In a message titled “Put Nigeria First or step aside” Dr. Ogah urged officeholders at all levels to abandon personal or partisan interests and prioritize the welfare of the Nigerian people.
“Democracy thrives only when leaders place national interest above personal ambition,” he said. “Nigeria cannot move forward if those entrusted with power Continue to use it for self-promotion rather than public good.” Dr. Ogah stressed that Democracy Day should not just be a ceremonial
observance, but a day of deep reflection on how far Nigeria has comne and the sacrifices made by heroes of democracy, both known and unsung.
“We must remember that democracy is not just about elections or titles, it is about delivering results to the people. Good roads, access to healthcare, education, jobs, and justice are the true

dividends of democracy,” he noted.

While acknowledging the difficulties faced by Nigerians, Dr. Ogah also expressed confidence in the direction of the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, particularly in the area of economic reforms.

“President Tinubu has shown courage in tackling long-standing economic issues. The reforms may be tough in the short term, but they are laying the foundation for a stronger and more self-reliant Nigeria. We must support these efforts, not sabotage them,” he said.

The Abia-born political figure further called on fellow politicians, especially those from the Southeast, to rise above internal divisions and contribute constructively to national dialogue and development.

“The future of Nigeria depends on the collective effort of its leaders and citizens. If we cannot contribute meaningfully to this future, then we must step aside and allow others to lead.”

Dr. Ogah also charged Nigerian youths to take ownership of democracy by staying informed, participating in governance, and holding leaders accountable.

“Democracy is not for politicians alone, it belongs to the people. Let us all rise to our responsibility as citizens and work for a Nigeria we can all be proud of.
