The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has recorded a 40 percent decline in cases of extortion and unofficial charges across its centres.

NIMC Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, made this known on Friday during an event in Lagos, attributing the decline to improved transparency in the commission’s fee structure.

She reaffirmed that enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) remains free nationwide. According to her, the number of Nigerians enrolled rose from 120 million in May to 122 million in June 2025.

“We have standardised modification and authentication fees, and these are publicly disclosed. Our enforcement of a transparent fee structure has resulted in a 40 percent drop in extortion and unofficial charges,” she said.

Coker-Odusote added that services such as Date of Birth modification now follow a uniform and regulated pricing system to reduce exploitation.

NIMC had earlier explained the rationale behind its reviewed service fees while announcing the 120 million NIN milestone.
