Authorities at Obafemi Awolowo University have ordered a temporary shutdown of academic activities, directing students to vacate campus for a three-week mid-semester break following widespread protests.
The decision, approved by the institution’s governing senate, came after tensions escalated during demonstrations over transportation difficulties and other student welfare concerns. The protests disrupted movement within and around the campus, with major access routes blocked and normal activities brought to a halt.
University officials explained that the break is intended to ease tensions, ensure safety, and create space for dialogue between management and student representatives. They noted that earlier attempts to calm the situation did not yield the desired results, as unrest continued to pose risks to both students and the public.
The protest was largely driven by dissatisfaction with a newly introduced transport system, which students say has led to delays, overcrowding, and long waiting times. Additional grievances included accommodation issues and disruptions linked to ongoing upgrades of the institution’s online portal.
School authorities have urged students to remain peaceful during the break, assuring that efforts are underway to address the concerns raised and restore normal academic activities once the situation stabilises.
