The Nigerian Senate has warned suspended lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against returning to the Red Chamber, insisting she remains barred from legislative activities pending the expiration of her suspension.
Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu, in a statement issued on Sunday, dismissed claims that a court order had directed her reinstatement. He clarified that the recent judgment by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, contained no mandatory directive compelling the Senate to recall the Kogi Central senator before her suspension elapses.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March 2025 over a heated altercation involving seat arrangements and accusations of sexual misconduct against Senate President Godswill Akpabio — allegations he has since denied.
Following the court ruling, the embattled senator announced plans to resume plenary on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. But the Senate has described her move as “legally untenable.”
“It is surprising and legally unsound that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently on appeal and has filed a motion for stay of execution against binding court orders, seeks to act on an imaginary directive that doesn’t exist,” Adaramodu stated.
The Senate maintains that her suspension remains in effect until formally lifted.
