The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has released a sobering update on the ongoing 2025 flood crisis, revealing a significant toll on lives and property across Nigeria. According to the agency’s situation report made public on Friday, 165 people have died so far due to flood-related incidents, while 82 individuals are still missing. In total, over 119,000 residents have been impacted by the devastating floods.
The report highlights widespread destruction and displacement in 19 states, with 43,936 people forced to leave their homes. NEMA further disclosed that 138 individuals sustained injuries, while 8,594 houses were affected and 8,278 farmlands destroyed. These figures span 43 Local Government Areas, illustrating the extensive reach and severity of the disaster.
Vulnerable groups, particularly children and women, have borne the brunt of the flooding. The data reveals that among the affected are 53,314 children and 36,573 women. Men account for 24,600 of the victims, while 5,304 elderly and 1,863 persons living with disabilities were also impacted by the flood events.
The states most severely hit include Imo, Rivers, Abia, Borno, and Kaduna. However, the full list of affected states extends to Abia, the FCT, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto. These regions have experienced varying degrees of flooding, leaving communities in distress and infrastructure damaged.
As the rainy season continues, NEMA is urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to early warning advisories. The agency has assured that it is working with relevant authorities to provide relief and mitigate further impacts of the disaster.
