U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to raise tariffs on Indian goods, criticising India’s continued trade in Russian oil amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In a post shared Monday on his social media platform, Trump accused India of purchasing large quantities of Russian oil and reselling it on global markets for profit. He claimed that India was profiting from the war while turning a blind eye to the suffering of Ukrainians caused by what he called the “Russian War Machine.”
“India doesn’t care how many people are being killed in Ukraine,” Trump wrote, expressing frustration over what he views as opportunistic trade practices.
While Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports during his presidency, as well as unspecified penalties related to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil and military equipment, he did not provide details on the new tariff increase or when it would take effect.
The remarks come amid speculation about Trump’s potential return to the White House and his continued criticism of U.S. foreign policy under President Joe Biden. Trump also appeared to dismiss concerns about not being considered for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026, saying it was of little concern to him.
India has not officially responded to the new tariff announcement.
