The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has commenced the offtake of 10 megawatts of solar energy from the Haske Solar Plant, located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster, Kano. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s move towards clean and sustainable energy supply.

The energy offtake follows the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Haske Solar Company Ltd. The plant, commissioned in January 2023, was developed by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and is managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI). This agreement ensures the supply of renewable power from the operational 10MW facility.

According to a statement from KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, the agreement was signed in Abuja by the company’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed. Also present was Yusuf Yahaya, Managing Director of Future Energies Africa (FEA), KEDCO’s core investor.

Dr. Jimeta described the partnership as a crucial advancement in KEDCO’s efforts to deliver stable and sustainable electricity. He noted that the solar energy is being evacuated through the Abattoir Injection Substation and distributed to industrial customers via the NBC 11KV and Ceramic 11KV feeders. He emphasized that the initiative supports economic growth and energy security across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.

Yusuf Yahaya reaffirmed FEA’s commitment to transforming KEDCO and spearheading renewable energy solutions across its network. KEDCO also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, NSIA, MOFI, and the Kano State Government for their roles in bringing Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar plant to fruition. The company confirmed that more renewable energy projects are in the pipeline as part of its broader energy diversification strategy.
