Lionel Messi scored twice in an emotional night in Buenos Aires as Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday. The victory, played before 80,000 fans at the Mas Monumental Stadium, marked Messi’s last home qualifier for Argentina. The 39-year-old, who will turn 39 during next year’s tournament in North America, continues to look central to Lionel Scaloni’s plans as the reigning champions prepare to defend their crown.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, struck in the 39th and 80th minutes to delight the home crowd. His family, including his three sons and father Jorge, were present to witness the occasion, which carried a celebratory tone given Argentina had already secured qualification.

Elsewhere in South America, Uruguay confirmed their place at the 2026 finals with a commanding 3-0 win over Peru in Montevideo. Goals from Rodrigo Aguirre, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and Federico Viñas sealed the victory. The result meant that veteran coach Marcelo Bielsa, now 70, successfully led a third national team to World Cup qualification.

Colombia also booked their ticket after a 3-0 triumph over Bolivia, with James Rodriguez, Jhon Córdoba, and Juan Fernando Quintero all on target. Meanwhile, Paraguay claimed the last spot of the night by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw, securing their ninth World Cup appearance and their first since 2010. Brazil had already sealed qualification earlier in the campaign.
