The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) has intensified efforts to bring down food prices, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to implement swift and practical measures.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents.

He explained that the directive prioritizes ensuring safe passage for farm produce across transport routes to cut logistics costs, which remain a major driver of food inflation nationwide.

“The President has given a matching order with a federal executive council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” Abdullahi said.

He stressed that Tinubu’s vision of food security goes beyond production to cover affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis.

The minister also announced plans to launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost productivity, alongside a cooperative reform initiative designed to mobilize resources and empower rural farmers to expand their economic activities.

“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilisation, economic activity generation, and livelihood improvement,” Abdullahi added.

The workshop, themed “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges and Responsibilities”, featured contributions from Senate Media Committee Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu; former presidential aide, Senator Ita Solomon Enang; and NILDS Director-General, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.
