The inaugural Abia Para Badminton International Tournament has ended in Umuahia with Nigeria clinching a total of 3 gold, 4 silver, and 9 bronze medals, finishing fourth overall in the historic competition.

Among Nigeria’s gold medalists was Abia’s Jeremiah Nnanna, who made the state proud with his victory. Other gold medal winners included Eniola Bolaji, Nigeria’s Paralympic bronze medalist, who triumphed over Cameroon’s Danyele Mouafo in the women’s singles SL3, and Mary Nathan, who defeated Brazil’s Juscileia Silva in the women’s singles WH1 category.

Declaring the tournament closed and inaugurating the All African Para Badminton Championships on Sunday, October 5th, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti approved the request for Abia to host the event again next year.

> “On the request to hold this competition again in Abia State next year, it has already been approved. So, we look forward to seeing you here again next year,” Otti announced.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusion, noting that people with disabilities deserve equal opportunities in all aspects of life.

> “Our mantra in Abia is inclusion. That’s why we offered to host you. For us in leadership, we have no excuse not to provide opportunities for people who are born with one little problem or another,” he said.

“Even in our public transport system, we’ve made provisions for those in wheelchairs so they can enjoy the same comfort as everyone else.”

Governor Otti also announced cash awards for all 14 countries that participated in the tournament.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, thanked the governor for his vision and support.

> “This championship has not only been about medals or competition. It’s been about redefining possibilities and proving that abilities know no boundaries,” he said.

The CEO and representative of the Badminton World Federation, Mr. Jeff Shingoli, commended Abia State and Nigeria for their hospitality and commitment to the sport.

> “Abia State and Nigeria have shown outstanding commitment by welcoming the world’s best. Together, we are building not only champions on the court but also champions of life,” Shingoli noted.

Similarly, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Francis Orbih, lauded Governor Otti for sponsoring the event and urged that it be made an annual fixture.

> “Your continued partnership demonstrates your commitment to the growth of Para Badminton, not just in Nigeria but across Africa and the world,” Orbih stated.

In a vote of thanks, Vice President of the Para Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Ekeoma Samuel, praised the Abia State Government for providing mats, wheelchairs, and other logistics, expressing optimism that the state would host again next year.

The grand finale, which featured the presentation of medals and trophies to winners, was attended by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, members of the State Executive Council, sports officials, and other dignitaries.
