Hon. Obi Aguocha Commends Abia Assembly for Courageous Stand on Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has commended the Abia State House of Assembly for its bold resolution to embark on a peaceful march to Abuja in demand for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Aguocha described the lawmakers’ move as “a patriotic and human-centered action that resonates with the genuine call for peace, justice, and reconciliation in the South-East.” He said the decision of the Abia Assembly to align with Governor Alex Otti and other regional leaders in seeking Kanu’s release on medical grounds demonstrates a deep understanding of the region’s collective pain and the urgent need to heal the wounds of division.

He particularly praised the Assembly for moving the motion of urgent public importance and for steering the conversation in a direction that reflects the yearnings of Ndi Abia and the Igbo nation at large.

“The Abia State House of Assembly has once again shown leadership rooted in empathy and courage. Their call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release is not just political, it is humanitarian, moral, and necessary for peace in our land,” Aguocha said.

Recall that Hon. Aguocha recently had an altercation with the Speaker of the House of Representatives on the floor of the National Assembly over his persistent complaints about the deteriorating health condition of Nnamdi Kanu and the federal government’s seeming silence on the matter. Despite that incident, the lawmaker has maintained his advocacy for Kanu’s medical attention and eventual release, insisting that peace and national cohesion cannot thrive under perceived injustice.

Aguocha further urged South-East lawmakers in the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to rally behind the Abia Assembly’s position and speak with one voice until Kanu’s health and freedom are secured.

“What the Abia lawmakers have done gives new strength to the voice of reason. It is a call for collective responsibility—to ensure that justice, equity, and dialogue prevail over hostility and silence,” he added.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working with the Abia Assembly, Governor Otti, and other South-East leaders to advance genuine peace efforts, noting that Kanu’s release remains key to addressing insecurity and rebuilding confidence across the region
