The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Command, has intercepted two containers loaded with imported vehicles used to conceal illicit drugs valued at over ₦5.3 billion.

Comptroller Frank Onyeka, the Customs Area Controller, disclosed the seizures in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, describing the operation as a product of intelligence-led enforcement and a strong commitment to trade compliance.

According to Onyeka, the first container (HLXU8500072), which arrived from Montreal, Canada, was intercepted on September 4 following detailed intelligence analysis. A joint physical examination revealed 156 packets of Colorado Indica (78kg) and 1.2kg of Hashish Oil concealed inside four imported vehicles.

The second container (FANU312876/9) was intercepted on October 24 after the command acted on actionable intelligence. Inside were 2,081 packages of Cannabis Indica (1,093kg) and eight packages of Crystal Methamphetamine (8kg), also hidden in four vehicles.

The total street value of the seized narcotics was estimated at ₦5.304 billion, according to Customs valuation reports.

Onyeka confirmed that all the illicit substances have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. He commended the NDLEA, Nigerian Navy, Police, and other security agencies for their collaborative efforts.

Reaffirming the command’s dedication to maintaining secure borders, Onyeka stressed that the NCS would remain vigilant and uncompromising in enforcing Nigeria’s laws and international trade standards. He also urged importers and exporters to adhere strictly to customs regulations and ensure honest declarations.

Receiving the seized items, Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Tin Can Strategic Command, Daniel Onyishi, lauded the Customs Service for its professionalism and vigilance, describing the operation as a model of effective inter-agency cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

He assured that the NDLEA would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the lawful disposal of the confiscated substances.
