Ahmed Idris Wase, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has revealed that names believed to belong to Boko Haram members and other criminal elements were included among those shortlisted for recruitment into the Nigerian Army and Police Force. He made the disclosure during a recent plenary session addressing the nation’s security challenges.

Wase cautioned that such infiltration exposes serious flaws in Nigeria’s recruitment process and poses a significant threat to national security. He urged political actors involved in candidate endorsements to ensure only individuals of proven integrity are recommended for security service roles.

The lawmaker, who lost family members to terrorist attacks, stated that the infiltration partly explains why criminal gangs and insurgent groups continue to operate unchecked in many areas. He described the situation as a betrayal of public trust and called for urgent reforms to prevent further security breaches.

Wase also emphasized that Nigeria’s security problems stem from criminality and weak institutions, not religion or ethnicity. He stressed the importance of strengthening vetting procedures and overhauling recruitment systems to restore public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
