An Ekiti State resident has reportedly been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) after security officials traced a SIM card previously linked to a kidnapping case to him. Family members say he lawfully purchased and registered the SIM in Lagos months ago and had no knowledge of its alleged past use.
According to his daughter, DSS operatives arrested her father at their home in Iyi-Ekiti without explanation and took him away. The family claimed they were initially denied access to him, and officers at the DSS office reportedly refused to confirm he was in custody.
Relatives insist he committed no crime and argue that the ordeal exposes dangers associated with the recycling of mobile numbers without proper background checks. They say innocent citizens can be wrongly implicated when old SIM cards connected to criminal activities are reissued to new users.
The man was eventually released, but his family continues to call on telecommunications companies and regulatory authorities to strengthen SIM registration and monitoring systems so lawful subscribers are not subjected to wrongful arrests in the future.
