Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a 15 MVA injection substation project aimed at improving electricity distribution in Umuahia and surrounding areas. The initiative includes a 7.5 MVA, 33/11 kV substation in partnership with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) under the Federal Government’s NIPP program, alongside a state-funded 7.5 MVA substation proposed in the 2026 budget.

Speaking at the event in Ogurube Layout, Governor Otti emphasized his administration’s commitment to addressing the state’s energy challenges. He noted that the state’s project was planned to complement the federal initiative and assured that it would be completed within three months, urging the NDPHC contractor to expedite their work for a joint commissioning by June 2026.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for fostering collaborations with states, private sector partners, and international stakeholders in the energy sector. He also acknowledged the NDPHC management, led by Engineer Jennifer Adighije, for selecting Abia State for strategic power infrastructure investments, describing the partnership as a key driver for social and economic development. The Governor further revealed that arrangements with Heirs Holdings have been finalized to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to Aba Power Limited to enhance electricity generation.

Speakers at the ceremony, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, and the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, reaffirmed their support for the project, noting its importance for local business growth and state development. Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and former legislator Hon. Oluchi Udo Ibeji also commended the Governor for attracting such a significant power project. NDPHC representatives highlighted that the installations include 7.5 MVA injection substations, distribution lines, and low-tension networks to strengthen the power supply in Umuahia and enhance industrial productivity.
