Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian military following the killing of female protesters during a demonstration in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The women were said to be protesting alleged failure by security agencies to enforce a curfew introduced to curb ongoing communal clashes in the area.
The rights group reported that at least nine women lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries during the incident. Witnesses claimed troops fired live rounds into the crowd without warning, leading to multiple casualties among the unarmed protesters.
Describing the action as a grave violation of human rights and international standards on the use of force, Amnesty International called for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation. The organisation urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable and that justice is delivered to the victims and their families.
In response, the military rejected the allegations, stating that soldiers were only involved in dispersing protesters and clearing makeshift barricades near government facilities. It denied that any troops deliberately opened fire on civilians, maintaining that its personnel acted within the rules of engagement.
