Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stressed that turning a club’s fortunes around is about patience and hard work—not instant fixes. Speaking ahead of City’s New Year’s Day clash with Sunderland, Guardiola reflected on last season’s struggles and highlighted that managers “are not magicians” who can solve problems instantly.

Guardiola, who has enjoyed one of the most successful managerial careers in football, admitted that something was “missing” around the City training ground during their difficult campaign. However, he believes that the team’s improved mindset and renewed energy have been key to their resurgence this season.

The Spaniard explained that meaningful discussions with his squad and coaching staff during last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup helped reset the mood. These talks, combined with enjoying each other’s company off the pitch, helped spark a shift in approach and attitude.

Guardiola said that while winning matches doesn’t instantly solve everything, consistent effort and belief eventually allow a team to recognise its strengths. Despite acknowledging there is still room for improvement, he remains optimistic about City’s form and mentality.
