Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has presented the trophy of the 2025 Pastor Laz and Rose Otti Memorial Football Tournament to Umuehim Football Club, winners of the competition.
The presentation took place on Wednesday, December 31, at Umuehim Primary School Field, Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, during the 2025 edition of Ehi La Uguru Day, themed “Celebrating Our Heritage, Unity and Progress.”
Governor Otti, who was joined by Dr. Alex Alozie and former Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, congratulated the winners and all participating teams. He directed that both the champions and runners-up receive their cash prizes and challenged Umuehim FC to defend their title next year.
The Governor commended the organisers for honouring past heroes of Nvosi community, noting that such recognition encourages unity and development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to celebrating distinguished Abians, recalling plans to honour late icon, Chief Jaja Wachuku, on January 1, 2026.
> “We will continue to recognise and celebrate people who have contributed to the growth of Abia State,” he said.
Governor Otti also announced that the fencing of Umuehim Primary School, venue of the event, would be completed before the end of January 2026.
Earlier, Chairman of the Ehi La Uguru Day Celebration, Pastor Odoemelam Nwaru, expressed confidence in Governor Otti’s leadership, declaring strong community support ahead of 2027.
Speaking on behalf of the Planning Committee, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbo, thanked the Governor for his transformational projects, including the completed Ehi La Uguru–Umunkpeyi Road with streetlights and ongoing reconstruction of Umunkpeyi–Amaiyi Road. He also highlighted the introduction of electric buses across the state.
Elder statesman, Dr. Gershon Amuta, reaffirmed the unwavering support of Ehi La Uguru community and the Ngwa nation for Governor Otti, praying for God’s continued guidance and assuring him of victory in 2027.
Highlights of the ceremony included special prayers by Ndi Eze Ngwa led by the First Deputy Chairman of the Abia Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Nelson Nmerengwa, as well as the presentation of 26 books authored by 14-year-old Uchegbue Joseph Chimgozirim to the Governor. The event was attended by top government officials, including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Rowland Dennis, Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, and several commissioners.
