Chaos erupted at a busy market in Enugu on Wednesday as a group of traders allegedly attacked an Ebonyi widow with machetes during a dispute over the sale of donkey meat, leaving the victim seriously injured and raising urgent concerns about lawlessness in local trading hubs.

The incident reportedly unfolded when the widow, a resident of Ebonyi State who had travelled to the Enugu market to sell donkey meat, was confronted by other traders who objected to her merchandise. Eyewitnesses said tensions quickly escalated into violence, with the aggrieved group reportedly attacking her with machetes in full view of shocked marketgoers.

Local witnesses described scenes of panic as the victim cried out for help while bystanders scrambled for safety. Some traders intervened to stop the assault and rushed the injured woman to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

A representative of the market association confirmed the incident but said efforts are underway to identify those involved and bring them to justice. “We condemn this act of violence. The market is meant for peaceful business, and no trader should be subjected to attack,” the official said.

Residents and market stakeholders have expressed alarm over the incident, describing it as a disturbing sign of deteriorating security in commercial areas. They called on law enforcement agencies to step up patrols and ensure that markets remain safe places for lawful trade and livelihoods.

Law enforcement authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, and investigations are ongoing. The attack has reignited broader public debates about market violence, trader disputes and the responsibility of security agencies to protect citizens engaged in legitimate business activities.

This episode comes against a backdrop of heightened concerns over violent clashes and insecurity in parts of southeastern Nigeria, where similar incidents have periodically drawn criticism of policing and community safety measures.
