Civil servants under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have commenced an indefinite strike starting Monday, January 19, 2026, shutting down offices across the capital. The action comes after what the workers describe as persistent neglect of their demands by FCTA management.
The strike was organized by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) following a seven-day ultimatum to authorities that expired without resolution. Operations in FCTA secretariats, departments, agencies, area councils, and parastatals are reportedly affected.
The unions highlighted several issues as reasons for the strike, including unpaid wages and promotion arrears, delayed promotions, continued service of retired directors and permanent secretaries, and unremitted pension and National Housing Fund contributions. Workers also raised concerns about poor working conditions and neglect of staff welfare.
Union leaders criticized the recent promotion examination, claiming that many staff were disadvantaged due to irregularities in the process. JUAC has called on all members to fully comply with the strike until their grievances are addressed.
The FCTA management has not yet responded publicly, and the strike underscores growing tensions between civil servants and government officials over pay, benefits, and working conditions in Nigeria’s capital.
