The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced March 28 and 29, 2026, as the dates for its long-awaited National Convention in Abuja.

The decision came during the 105th meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday, which reviewed the party’s internal state, recent judicial rulings, and preparations for upcoming democratic processes.

A communiqué issued at the meeting stated that the convention will elect members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs. NEC described the exercise as a crucial step toward stabilising the party and strengthening its readiness for future elections.

In preparation for the convention, NEC approved a nationwide timetable for congresses, with ward and local council congresses set for February and state congresses scheduled for March. Party sources said these congresses are intended to ensure a smooth transition into the national convention and resolve the PDP’s longstanding leadership challenges.

The NEC also extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Committee and state and zonal caretaker committees until the convention and related congresses are conducted. The move, according to insiders, aims to maintain continuity and prevent a leadership vacuum during the preparatory period.

Caretaker Committee Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, referencing a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan affirming the committee’s authority, said the leadership would continue to work toward justice, stability, and transparent processes within the party.

“Any moment from now, we shall roll out our timetable for activities relating to outstanding congresses in some states. This will usher in a seamless National Convention,” Mohammed said.

In a statement at the meeting, FCT Minister and former PDP governor Nyesom Wike declared keen interest in the affairs of the Oyo State chapter of the party. He emphasized that his focus remains on the survival, stability, and nationwide success of the PDP.

“Let me declare my interest clearly: I am interested in the survival and success of this party. I am also interested in all the happenings in the Oyo PDP. That is all I am interested in,” Wike said, highlighting the party’s ongoing legal challenges and the need for unity ahead of future elections.
