Nigeria Police Launch 90‑Day Training to Improve Trauma and Mental Health Response

The Nigeria Police Force has begun a 90‑day specialised training programme focused on trauma awareness and mental health care for officers across the country, aiming to improve how personnel cope with stressful duties and assist others affected by traumatic situations.

The initiative, launched in Jos, Plateau State, is organised in collaboration with the University of Jos and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and brings together participants from regions affected by conflict.

Officials say the course combines classroom instruction with practical simulations, covering areas such as trauma management, crisis intervention, counselling, conflict resolution, and effective communication — all designed to enhance both officers’ wellbeing and their engagement with the public.

Police leaders hope the training will promote resilience among officers and improve service delivery in communities, particularly in areas where violent crimes and psychological challenges are more common.
