Abia State has launched an ambitious health initiative aimed at providing free medical care for pupils and students in public schools across the state. The program, led by the Abia State Health Insurance Agency (ABSHIA), is the first of its kind in Nigeria and seeks to ensure that children receive essential healthcare without financial barriers.
The registration exercise has begun in schools within the Abia South Senatorial Zone and will gradually extend to all 17 Local Government Areas. Children enrolled in the program will have access to comprehensive medical services throughout the school year, including during holidays, ensuring continuous care for their health needs.
The scheme is designed to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians by covering medical expenses for illnesses and emergencies. By eliminating out-of-pocket costs, the state hopes to foster healthier communities and promote regular school attendance among children.
Funded entirely by the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti, the initiative reflects the administration’s strong commitment to public welfare and child health. School leaders have welcomed the program, pledging full support to facilitate smooth registration and participation.
Experts believe the program will enhance healthcare access, improve educational outcomes, and strengthen the state’s public health system. As registration expands, the initiative marks a significant step toward inclusive and affordable healthcare for Abia State’s youngest residents.
