The Abia State Government has launched a new boxing programme aimed at discovering and nurturing young athletes from secondary schools across the state. The initiative is in partnership with IKEUJ Enterprises, led by former international boxer Ikechukwu Okoronkwo.
As part of the programme, public schools in all 17 local government areas will host trainers who will teach students boxing skills and provide mentorship to help them excel in the sport.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly expressed full support for the project, highlighting the government’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports development.
Okoronkwo thanked the governor and officials for their backing, pledging to use his expertise to groom future boxing champions who can raise Abia State’s profile in national and international competitions.
The initiative is designed to provide young people with opportunities to shine in both sports and community activities, following successful models from other states.
