The Lagos State Government has announced plans to enforce stricter regulations targeting drivers without official certification and those who violate key safety rules. The move is part of the state’s Drivers’ Care Initiative, aimed at improving road safety and professional standards among commercial drivers.
Authorities said that after the sensitisation phase of the programme, all drivers on Lagos roads must be properly certified through the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute. Drivers found operating without valid credentials will face penalties.
The initiative also included free medical screenings, eye tests, and corrective glasses for drivers, alongside training in defensive driving to reduce accidents. Officials warned that unsafe practices, including driving under the influence, will no longer be tolerated.
The state urged drivers to complete their certification and comply with traffic regulations ahead of the full enforcement phase, emphasizing that the programme is part of broader efforts to protect lives, safeguard infrastructure, and raise professional standards in the transport sector.
