Community Erupts in Protest After Youth Leader Was Killed in Rivers State

Igwuruta community in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, was thrown into turmoil following the killing of a prominent youth leader, sparking outrage among residents.

The victim, Festus Nchelem, known for his work coordinating local youth activities, was attacked by suspected herders while engaging with community members. The assault left him dead and injured a member of the local vigilante group who tried to intervene. Witnesses reported that the assailants arrived on several motorcycles and escaped quickly, leaving the area in fear and chaos.

Angry residents staged protests in the streets, demanding justice for Nchelem and calling for enhanced security measures to prevent similar attacks. They also urged the authorities to address ongoing tensions linked to criminal activities in the area.

Community leaders have since implemented curfews and restricted motorcycle movements in certain areas to maintain order. Security operatives confirmed that suspects have been detained, and investigations are underway as residents seek accountability and peace in their neighborhood.
