A Catholic priest in Enugu has urged Nigerian politicians to use the Lenten season as a period of moral reflection and ethical leadership, warning them to abandon practices like election rigging and manipulation. He emphasized that this time should inspire leaders to act with honesty and accountability in their political conduct.

Speaking during an Ash Wednesday service at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ologo, Fr. Theophilus Nwodo encouraged politicians to follow the example of Jesus Christ’s humility, truthfulness, and commitment to justice. He said that embracing these virtues could help reduce malpractice in the nation’s electoral process and foster a more peaceful political environment.

Fr. Nwodo also reminded leaders that Lent is a period of reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal. He called on them to consider not only their personal faith but also the wider impact of their decisions on society, urging actions that promote fairness, transparency, and the well-being of the citizens.

He concluded by stressing that leadership rooted in integrity and service could strengthen national stability and set a positive example for future generations. According to Fr. Nwodo, a government guided by ethical principles is essential for nurturing trust between leaders and the public and ensuring a credible electoral process.
